Woodman’s is open 24 hours. Fewer employees overnight. According to a longtime employee (nearly four decades with the company), one rumor says those noisy floors were actually helpful.

Carts rolling across that textured tile made enough racket to alert staff that someone had walked in.

It’s basically the grocery version of gravel in your driveway.

Smart? Maybe.

Plausible? Absolutely.

Theory #2: The Dirt-Disguising Design

Another long-standing explanation is that the color and texture helped knock dirt and debris off shoes before customers hit the bright aisles. And if anything remained? It blended in.

Function meets camouflage.
