Illinois is home to the bagel capital of the world.

I'm not a big fan of breakfast foods but I do enjoy a good bagel. Sometimes I prefer to use them instead of regular bread for a sandwich.

There are a lot of places in Illinois to purchase tasty bagels.

In fact, did you know the bagel capital of the world is located right here in Illinois? I had no idea.

According to onlyinyourstate.com,

"Are you surprised that an Illinois town calls itself the “Bagel Capital of the World”? We were, too. But if you take a closer look at the way Mattoon, Illinois celebrates this baked treat, you can see why. The residents of the town go to great lengths to recognize the part that bagels play in their lives and local economy."

If you don't believe me, here's why.

  • It's the home of Lender's Bagels since 1986.
  • That factory is the only one still operating for that brand.
  • The company holds a festival for residents.
  • Bagel-theme events happen during the celebration like "Run For The Bagels," "Bagel Fest Softball Tournament" and "Miss Bagel" competition.

Bagel Fest happens in July. For info, look HERE.

I believe having a bagel factory and hosting a bagel themed festival are definitely excellent reasons for them to be considered the "Bagel Capital."
