Whenever it's way too cold outside (that's like any temperature under 30 degrees for me), I love staying in bed while listening to Podcasts like Theo Von, Call Her Daddy, and Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain.  I've started picking up crocheting and photography, too.  Those are favorite ways to keep my mind busy in the winter!

If you need some ideas or new hobbies to start this winter, here's a beginner's guide.

How to Keep Your Mind Busy During a Long Winter in Illinois

When winter in Illinois brings extreme cold and schools close due to below-zero temperatures, it can feel like there’s not much to do. Instead of letting the chill bring you down, try these fun and productive ways to keep your mind busy and make the most of those indoor days.

  1. Puzzles: A jigsaw puzzle, crossword, or Sudoku, puzzles are a great way to engage your brain. They help improve focus and problem-solving skills while keeping you entertained.
  2. Clean the House: It might not sound exciting, but organizing and cleaning your home can be surprisingly satisfying and therapeutic. You will 100% feel accomplished!
  3. Binge-Watch a TV Series: In the mood for something more relaxing?  Pick a new TV series to binge-watch. Whether it’s a drama or light-hearted comedy, it’s a cozy way to pass the time and unwind.
  4. Plan New Recipes to Try: Look up new recipes or get creative!  Cooking can be therapeutic, and trying new dishes is a great way to break up the routine.
  5. Pick Up a New Hobby on the Weekends: Winter weekends are perfect for starting a new hobby. Invite friends for a bowling outing or host a game night. These social activities help combat winter isolation and bring some much-needed fun.

Illinois can see brutal winters and scorching summers.  Both can keep you cooped up in the house, so find a few new ways to keep your mind stimulated during both seasons!
