Illinois: The State That’s Not #1 (In People Leaving)
It’s official: Illinois is not the state Americans are fleeing the fastest. Sure, we cracked the top five, but hey, at least we didn’t snag the gold medal. For a state that often gets a bad rap for taxes, winters, and potholes so big they could host a swimming competition, this is a win worth celebrating.
The Top 5 States People Are Leaving
Here’s a quick rundown of the states Americans packed up and left behind in 2023:
- California – 690,502 departures (because who needs beaches when you can have less traffic?)
- Florida – 514,259 departures (turns out sunshine isn’t enough to cover sky-high living costs).
- New York – 483,523 departures (likely running from rent prices that could fund a small country).
- Texas – 480,822 departures (cowboy hats don’t make up for the sweltering heat).
- Illinois – 297,765 departures (we’re practically a homebody in comparison).
Why Aren’t We Number One?
For all the grumbling we do about Illinois, there’s a lot to love—or at least tolerate. Our food scene is unmatched. Pizza, Italian beef, and Chicago-style hot dogs (hold the ketchup, please). Who’s leaving that behind?

Then there’s our history. We’re the Land of Lincoln, for crying out loud. If Abraham Lincoln could survive Illinois winters (in pre-central-heating days, no less), we can certainly stick it out.
And let’s talk weather: yes, our winters are cold, but they’re not setting anything on fire or flooding the streets. Plus, surviving a Midwest winter builds character—or frostbite immunity. Either way, it’s something to brag about.

Staying Put Is the New Cool
So, to all the Illinoisans who didn’t flee: good for us! Let’s embrace the fact that we’re not topping this particular list. After all, if we weren’t here, who’d be left to complain about the weather, taxes, or roads? Somebody’s gotta do it.
