I know, you probably think there's no way there was an earthquake this morning. That's exactly what I thought to when my co-worker told me about it today. He tends to try to get us to believe things that aren't true so I needed proof.
There is it, USA Today is reporting a magnitude 3.4 earthquake recorded in Illinois this morning.
The earthquake was recorded in Somonauk, Illinois which is 64 miles west of Chicago and 70 miles south east of Rockford. It's near Sandwich, Illinois.

USA Today's report says the quake happened at 2:53 a.m. central time in the town.

The biggest city near Somonauk is Aurora, Illinois, but it's also close enough to DeKalb. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Facebook page shared the news to their fans early this morning with many of them saying they felt the quake in Burlington, Matla, Shabbona, Hinckley and Sycamore.
I'm pretty sure I slept through the 2 a.m. hour just fine and wouldn't expect to feel an earthquake from that far away but this is still pretty incredible.
Most sources say the magnitude of an earthquake needs to be at least a 4 to cause any damage.
The most recent report of an earthquake in Illinois prior to this was in December of 2023.
