Wisconsin Could Force Reckless Drivers to Slow Down—Literally
There’s a new plan rolling through Wisconsin that might finally make speed demons pump the brakes, whether they want to or not. State lawmakers just unveiled a bill that would require repeat reckless drivers to install “speed limiter” devices in their cars. Yep, technology that physically stops them from driving more than 20 miles per hour over the limit.
What the “Speed Limiter” Would Do

Fox 6 reported, if someone racks up two or more reckless driving convictions within five years, they’d be forced to drive a vehicle that can’t exceed a certain speed for at least a year. Tampering with it could even land them fines or jail time.

The Cost of Bad Decisions
The offender pays for the installation—around $1,700 total for the year, including setup and maintenance. Lawmakers say courts can reduce costs for low-income drivers, but either way, it’s not exactly pocket change for someone who already proved they can’t behave behind the wheel.

Great Idea… in Theory
In a perfect world, this might actually work. But let’s be real—speeding isn’t the only problem out there. Distracted drivers scrolling TikTok at red lights or those who treat stop signs as “gentle suggestions” are still making every commute feel like a game of Frogger.
Would a device like this make Wisconsin roads safer, or is it just another tech bandage for a much bigger traffic mess?
