Wisconsin’s ‘Godfather of Weed’ From Tons of Pot, to Jesus.
Wisconsin man, "John Gay" was known in prison as "The Godfather of Weed." Early on he figured a life of following the Grateful Dead and selling grilled cheese sandwiches was the way to go. Gotta have goals! DailyUnion
Later is life, selling weed in Wisconsin from a farm that his family lived in, in Kentucky...that seemed life a better plan. Obviously this was no "small operation." The day that he was raided by the National Guard, his life changed dramatically.
“They said they had found 1,800 and some pounds, that’s a ton of weed, was the big headline.” - John Gay
John was at home "drying" the weed when his front door was busted down. Law enforcement announced themselves, and his pot growing and selling days were over. John now faced 63 years in prison.
Once he entered prison, he was somewhat of a celebrity. Inmates recognizing him as the "Godfather of Weed."
“You’re the dude with a dump truck full of weed.”
All of this "celebrity" was too much for him and some inmates recognized that.
The "Godfather of Weed" turned to, God. This and his love of music has changed who John Gay is. After court hearings and random legal proceedings, he ended up with a sentence of nine years, six behind bars and the rest probation.
