Major Discount Retailer Announces More Illinois Store Closings
One of America's most popular discount retailers faces major setbacks as it navigates nationwide bankruptcy and massive store closures. With nearly 50 more locations slated to close, including one in Illinois, the once-thriving chain is significantly downsizing its footprint.
Big Lots Shutting Down More Stores Nationwide, Including One in Illinois
Nearly 50 more Big Lots stores across 25 states are preparing to close their doors, with Illinois joining the list. As part of the retailer’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing earlier this month, more than 340 locations have been marked for closure, with over 30 already permanently closed as of September 29. The closures keep rolling in, shrinking the retailer’s presence across the U.S.
Big Lots has confirmed plans to close around 250 stores by mid-January, adding to the nearly 300 locations that have already been shuttered or are slated to close soon. The once-sprawling chain has been hit hard, and by the time all the planned closures are done, it’s expected that roughly 550 stores will have disappeared from the map.
In true retail fashion, the liquidation process has begun. Banners on many stores’ websites now read “closing this location” and offer sales of up to 20% with some “limited exceptions.” It’s one final chance for bargain hunters to snag a deal before these stores are gone for good.
For those curious, here's a sampling of the states where Big Lots stores are closing: California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. Each of these states, along with many others, will see a significant reduction in Big Lots locations as the company downsizes.
