Why Checking Tire Pressure During Winter is a Must in Illinois
Living in the Midwest, we get some nasty winter weather which means we have to take extra care of our vehicles! In Illinois, temps have dropped, and snow has really been coming down lately. Besides a car wash, have you checked your tire pressure?
My dad is a retired mechanic, so I'm always taking my car to his house to get an oil change, tire rotation, my brakes checked, and air added to my tires. My tires aren't always cooperating, so he checks my tire pressure often.
Me being me, I didn't know how important that was, especially in the winter.
Why Checking Tire Pressure During Winter is a Must in Illinois
Did you know a significant drop in temperature can cause your tires pressure to decrease? Depending on how cold it is and how long it's been since you've driven your car last, it could lead to you having a flat tire.
"With winter's fluctuating temperatures, regularly monitor your tire pressure. If you observe a noticeable decrease, promptly inflate your tires for optimal performance and safety. In regions with significant temperature variations, consider checking more frequently." [ctd]
It just happened to me! Temps dropped overnight and when I woke up the next morning to go to work, my front passenger tire was completely flat.
I thought I had snow stuck underneath my car, but it turns out an air compressor would fix my entire problem.
It doesn't hurt to keep up on your car's maintenance. Afterall, it's how we get to our destinations day-to-day. Don't take it for granted!
"Inflating your winter tires according to your car manufacturer’s recommendation helps maintain good traction and handling on slippery icy surfaces, no matter the temperature change. Obviously, the same goes for all-season tires." [continental-tires]
If you're not sure how to inflate your tires or don't have an air compressor, take it to any gas station and there are air pumps you can use. Or take your vehicle to a tire shop for extra assistance. Better safe than sorry!
