We've already seen our first snow of the season, and honestly, mentally preparing to shovel endless piles of snow is exhausting to even think about.

Let's be real, snow is pretty to look at, especially when it's freshly fallen and all the Christmas lights are glowing in it.  But the minute it starts to pile up, and you've got to shovel?  Completely different story.

I rent for a reason.

I rent so I don't have to do any landscaping.

I rent so someone else can shovel.

I rent because I'd rather pay someone else to take care of everything expensive.

Lately, there's been a lot more conversation about just how dangerous snow shoveling really is, especially for your heart.  USA Today recently did a deep dive into the physical demands of the job, and they found it's not like a regular chore around the house.

Illinois Residents: Shoveling Snow Is Tougher on the Heart Than You Think

Shoveling snow "may by as or even more demanding on the heart than taking a treadmill stress test."  Let that sink in.  Something we all do half-asleep with gloves that never match is putting the same strain on our hearts as an actual medical test designed to push your cardiovascular system.

So, how old is TOO OLD to be shoveling this winter?

Some experts say 65.  Others suggest anyone over 45 should avoid shoveling altogether.  Studies back this information: cold-related cardiovascular deaths happen at nearly double the rate of heat-related ones, especially among men over 65.

Why is snow so heavy on the heart?

Well, multiple stressors happen at once!  The most is mainly static exertion, you're lifting heavy, wet snow and holding your breath without even realizing it, your arms are doing most of the work, and blood tends to pool in your lower body because you're not walking around much.  To add to all of that: cold air constricts blood vessels, raising your blood pressure!

Even though living in the Midwest kinda forces us to shovel in the winter, doesn't mean we're built for it.  Start shoveling slowly, take lots of breaks, push snow instead of lifting it, and bundle up!  Or, if you aren't equipped to do it, ask someone else to.  Snow is pretty, but your heart doesn't care.
