Yet another familiar name from the mall is closing stores. Claire’s, the fashion and jewelry chain known for ear piercings and trendy accessories, has announced it will shut down nearly 300 stores nationwide after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That includes more than a dozen locations here in Illinois and several in nearby Wisconsin.

Claire’s filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, citing increased competition, changes in consumer spending, and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail. The company said the decision was “difficult, but necessary” as it restructures its business. While Claire’s has been sold to a private equity firm, hundreds of locations remain at risk.
