FDA Warns Parents About the Dangers of Baby Neck Floats

The type of float shown above that I found on Amazon may seem like a great idea for young babies that can't hold their heads up well in the pool or bathtub, but it is definitely not!

Honestly, I would never have put my girls in this type of pool float when they were young,  simply because I have always been leery about anything that goes around the neck when it comes to babies. Turns out that fear wasn't too far off the mark.

ABC 7 Chicago reports that the FDA is strongly warning about the dangers of using baby neck floats after one child died and another was injured while using one.

It doesn't take much common sense to realize that these neck floats could easily lead to suffocation, but the most alarming thing is that some of these products have been marketed for use in water therapy for special needs kids. According to ABC 7's article, "companies have not gotten government approval to promote neck floats for a child's development".

As far as I can tell, no specific brands were mentioned in the FDA's warning, so the best advice is, if you have a float that goes around your baby's neck, don't use it!
