Did you know these statistics? Fires happen more often than you think!
- Almost 3 of every 5 home fire deaths resulted from fires with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms (NFPA)
- Carbon monoxide is the #1 cause of accidental poisoning in the US (CDC)
- Unattended cooking is the #1 cause of home fires (NFPA)
- A fire department responds to a fire every 23 seconds in America (NFPA)
Here are five essential ways to ensure you’re prepared:
1. Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms
Ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home, including inside bedrooms. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
2. Create an Escape Plan
Making family escape routes with at least two exits from each room. Go over plan every month as a reminder. Designate a meeting point outside the home.
3. Practice Safe Cooking Habits
Cook often? Never leave appliances unattended when in use, especially a stovetop and oven. Have a fire extinguisher (or two!) handy, always.

4. Clear Clutter and Flammable Materials
This is your sign to store flammable materials like paper, cleaning supplies, and chemicals safely. Don't put any of these near heat sources.
5. Educate Your Family
Teach your family about fire safety and how to use a fire extinguisher. Knowledge might just be your lifesaver.
