Illinois Man Steals TV Remote Control and Gets 22 Years in Jail
This guy was a repeat offender but is this sentence a little too much? After you read this story, tell us what you think.
Eric Bramwell of Wheaton, Illinois has some pretty sticky fingers. Over the years Eric has stolen many TV's and remote controls. It's a mystery why he has such a desire for those items, but it's been enough of them for his last remote control theft to qualify for Class X sentencing.
In August of 2015 Eric snatched a TV remote control from a common area inside a Wheaton apartment building. And because his thefts have been numerous he was sentenced to 22 years in jail. Seems pretty harsh right? Well get this.
Class X sentencing means he could've gotten a 30-year sentence.
State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement reported by the Chicago Tribune:
Regardless of what was stolen, Mr. Bramwell repeatedly thumbed his nose at the law. He took what he wanted time and time again and expected to avoid the consequences. That's not how it works, as Mr. Bramwell has now found out.
While Eric got a bit of a break on his sentence, 22 years does seem a bit ridiculous. What do you think?
