Why Many Illinois Schools Are Closed On Election Day
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. It's not only an important day to get out and vote, but an official state holiday.
Courthouses, the Secretary of State’s Driver’s Services facilities, and other local/state government facilities will be closed on Election Day.
Because it's considered a state holiday, that means public school students, grades K-12, aren't required to attend class.
In fact, most public schools close on Election Day.
Why Are Many Schools Closed On Election Day In Illinois?
According to an amendment under Illinois' school code, any school that isn't in session on Election Day can be used as a polling center. This gives more residents in these areas more accessibility to voting booths.
Some people don't have vehicles to get to polling places or it's out of the way from home or work, so some people just don't bother to vote.
This is one of the most important decisions Americans have to make. If you haven't voted yet, you're highly encouraged to. If you voted early, you're already ahead of the game! 'Getcha 'I Voted' sticker!

As for private schools and universities, these are not included in the terms of the legislation. This means class will still be in session on Tuesday for these institutions.
For now, Election Day isn't deemed a federal holiday, but that could change in the future. It's been tried in the past, but efforts have been unsuccessful.
