Illinois residents, be aware of a text scam targeting so many of us right now.

As of a couple days ago, the Cook County Clerk's Office is warning residents about a widespread text scam that looks incredibly real.  The messages claim you own money for unpaid traffic violations, parking tickets, or toll fines.  Some even say "final notice" or "unpaid charges" to create a sense of ugrency and panic.

These scam texts often include a link or QR code, pushing you to "pay now" before penalties increase.  But officials say this is exactly what you should NOT do.  Do not click the link.  Do not scan the code.  And definitely do not enter any personal or financial information.

The Clerk's Office has made it clear: They do not send text messages asking for payment on traffic violations.  If you receive one of these alerts, it's a scam.

The situation has gotten serious enough where enough people have actually shown up in person to pay fines that don't even exist.  If you're unsure whether you owe a legitimate fine, your best move is to contact the Cook County Circuit Court or local law enforcement directly.  Never though the link sent in a text!

And if you get one of these scam messages?  Report it by forwarding it to 7726 and then delete it immediately.  If it seems too good to be true, or you don't remember violating any laws, it's probably a scam.  Don't fall victim!
