14 Illinois Billionaires Land On Forbes’ “World’s Richest” List
It's safe to say there are some very deep-pocketed people in the state of Illinois, and the richest person in Illinois could go ahead and spend $10,000 per day for literally centuries before going broke.
Every year, Forbes releases its list of the richest people on the planet, and every year most of us think to ourselves that those numbers are almost impossible to wrap your head around.
But here’s something interesting from the 2026 Forbes World’s Billionaires rankings: Illinois holds its own with nearly anywhere when it comes to extreme wealth. Depending on how the list is counted and updated, there are roughly 14 Illinois residents who show up in the billionaire rankings this year, putting our state in some pretty elite company.
Not surprisingly, many of them are tied to the Chicago area.
Here's The Leader Of The Pack When We're Talking About Illinois Billionaires
That would be Lukas Walton, heir to the Walmart fortune, who has been the wealthiest person living in Illinois for several years. His fortune has been estimated at around $39 billion, making him not just the richest Illinoisan but one of the wealthiest people in the entire world.
After Walton, the Illinois billionaire list reads like a who’s-who of business, finance, and family dynasties. Names that frequently show up near the top include insurance entrepreneur Patrick Ryan, real-estate mogul Neil Bluhm, investment executive Joe Mansueto, and Beanie Babies creator Ty Warner.
And then there’s the Pritzker family, one of the most famous business families in America. Several members of the Hyatt Hotels family fortune appear on billionaire lists, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, whose net worth is estimated in the billions as well (and he's not even the richest of the Pritzkers).
Illinois' Billionaires Represent Well Over $100 Billion In Combined Wealth
To put that into perspective, a billion dollars is so large that financial experts often say if you spent $10,000 every single day, it would take more than 270 years to spend $1 billion. Now imagine fortunes that are ten, twenty, or even thirty times that size.
Like these estimated fortunes of Illinois billionaires:
Lukas Walton (about $39–46 billion)
Patrick G. Ryan (about $9–10 billion)
Neil Bluhm (about $8–9 billion)
Mark Walter (about $7 billion)
Ty Warner (about $6–7 billion)
Steve Lavin (about $6 billion)
Justin Ishbia (about $6 billion)
Richard Uihlein (about $6 billion)
Elizabeth Uihlein (about $6 billion)
Eric Lefkofsky (about $5–6 billion)
Joe Mansueto (about $5–6 billion)
Thomas Pritzker (about $6 billion)
Penny Pritzker (about $4 billion)
J. B. Pritzker (about $3–4 billion)
The median household wealth in the US is roughly around $190,000. Someone worth a billion dollars has more wealth than 5,000 average households combined.
Altogether, Illinois billionaires control well over $130 billion in combined wealth, according to estimates tied to the Forbes rankings.
