A movie studio in downstate Illinois helped generate $12.3 million in economic activity, marking Central Illinois as a key driver of Illinois' growing film industry.

Central Illinois Emerges as a Film Production Hub

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity joined local leaders at Flyover Film Studios in Champaign to spotlight the region's rapid growth in film production.

In 2025 alone, film activity generated $12.3 million in economic impact across the Champaign County region, which shows a strong rebound and expansion for Illinois' film sector.

Flyover Film Studios Fuels Local Jobs and Investment

Operating out of the former Chaunte Air Force Base in Rantour, Illinois, Flyover Film Studios has transformed six acres of decommissioned military space into a full-scale production campus.

The studio's sound stages, standing sets, and expansive hangars have hosted projects ranging from documentary filmmaking to music video production.

That versatility has driven job creation and business demand, earning Flyover the 2025 Rantoul Area Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award.

State Support Strengthens Illinois' Film Ecosystem

Illinois has supported the region's growth with targeted investments, including a $1.1 million Illinois Soundstage Program grant in 2024 and funding for tuition-free film workforce training programs, which have achieved a 100 percent job placement rate.

Statewide, film production expenditures reached $653 million in 2024, underscoring Illinois' resilience after the 2023 industry strikes and reinforcing Central Illinois' role in the state's film resurgence.
