Opening weekend and 2021 Plans announced for the McHenry Drive-In Movie Theater.

I have talked about it many times, one of the good things to happen in 2020 was the return to popularity of the drive-in movie theater. I have always enjoyed them. I started going as a kid and continue going whenever possible as an adult. I went a handful of times last year.

If you are an outdoor theater fan, living in Rockford is a pretty good place to live. There are three official locations not too far away including McHenry, Sterling, and Monroe. Plus, all the temporary pop-up ones that started around Illinois and Wisconsin.

As the weather started to get better, I began to think about spring and summer activities along with what I would like to do this year. Right there, at the top of my list is going to more drive-in movies. The first sign that it is getting closer happened this week.

From McHenry Outdoor Theater Facebook page...

According to shawlocal.com,

"The 2021 season will kick off April 30 and May 1 with a double feature of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” and the 1996 film “Twister” in an event that Dehn is calling “Sharknado Weekend.”

"Last year, people from McHenry County and beyond flocked to the McHenry Outdoor Theater as a safe, fun way to reconnect with pre-pandemic life while outbreaks and capacity limits endured through the summer and fall months."

"The drive-in theater business always has been about nostalgia and unearthing childhood memories, but providing that kind of comforting experience has taken on a whole new meaning in the past year, McHenry Outdoor Theater owner Scott Dehn said Monday."

Coming up this season, they will be able to be at full capacity which is 800 cars. The theater was allowed only half of that last year. Also, this year they will have a brand new screen which will make the movie look much better, especially for the people in the back.

They will feature both new releases and classic flicks which will be announced each week. The drive-in plans on hosting more events including concerts, comedians, and more. Graduations will also be offered for local schools looking for an alternate location to hold ceremonies.

The 2020 resurgence was great news for the industry because the numbers keep dropping with only 305 left in the United States. The result was for the first time in many years, more drive-ins were opened than closed down.

Do yourself a favor and go check out a drive-in movie this summer. Trust me, you will have a fun time.
