Shocker: Illinois’ Most Iconic TV Location’ Isn’t in Chicago
The most iconic TV location in Illinois was announced, and guess what? It's not in Chicago.
However, if you are in Rockford, you will need to load up the car and head to Joliet to check out the Old Joliet Prison, the site of the TV series Prison Break, a place that just earned the "iconic TV location" moniker from Stacker.
Just thinking about the limestone walls and imposing guard towers reminds me of just how impressive and kind of scary Old Joliet Prison is.
It is a must-visit for anyone who liked Prison Break (or maybe The Blues Brothers) if you haven't been.
Old Joliet Prison closed in 2002, but "prison after dark" guided and self-guided tours still offer a glimpse into its past, including its role as the setting for movies and TV outside of Prison Break.
When you're there, you can explore the cell blocks, chapels, and other areas while learning about some of Old Joliet Prison's most famous inmates.
There were also a few daring escapes during Old Joliet's time, and I'm sure the tour addresses those, too.
There are also fundraising events like Blues Brothers Con: The Sequel, set for August 17 at the Old Joliet Prison.
Dan Akroyd and James Belushi will be on hand to perform as the Blues Brothers.
According to the press release, proceeds from Blue Brothers Con will support the Joliet Area Historical Museum, which operates the prison for public tours and educational programs.
Sure, Prison Break is excellent, but Old Joliet Prison isn't the same without the Blue Brothers.
Have you been to Old Joliet Prison for a tour? Is it worth the time and money?
