Redbox has officially seen its days.  Nationwide, Redbox is closing all kiosks after its parent company files for bankruptcy.

I remember the days of physical DVDs and all the people lined up at the Redbox machine, outside Walgreens, really late at night trying to find a new movie to watch!  Then Netflix came in and took the streaming world to a whole new level.

Could Netflix and new streaming apps be the reason Redbox is shutting down?

End Of An Era: Redbox Closing Kiosks Nationwide, Including Illinois & Wisconsin

On Wednesday, June 10th, 2024, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, which is the parent company of Redbox, transitioned its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case to a Chapter 7 liquidation.  The result?  Redbox, the 22-year-old DVD rental and streaming service, will officially shut down.

This will lead to shutting down Redbox's network of 24,000 DVD rental kiosks across national retailers, plus over 1,000 employees left without jobs.

“Based on allegations we’ve heard, it’s important that a Chapter 7 trustee be appointed and undertake an appropriate investigation of the company," said Horan, per the outlet, adding that "1,000 people are about to lose their jobs, and they’re not even going to be paid for work that they did." If I wasn't getting paid for the work I put in for a major company like Redbox, I'd literally raise hell.  Those poor, poor employees being totally ripped off.  Wow.
