Rockford-Area People You Might Not Have Known Were In The Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is this weekend, so let's take a look at local Rockford-area people who played in the big game.
First, there have been only four people from the Rockford area who have appeared in the Super Bowl as a player or coach. But Sycamore's Ben Niemann will add to the list on Sunday.
The first from the area was Preston Pearson, who appeared in five Super Bowls with three different teams. Pearson, a Freeport High School grad, made his first appearance in Super Bowl III.
Ira Matthews is next on the list. Matthews, an East High School grad is the only Rockford high school athlete to play in the Super Bowl. He played in Super Bowl XV.
Jim Caldwell is the only Rockford-area person who didn't play in the Super Bowl but appeared as coach. Caldwell, a Beloit Memorial High School grad, coached the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
Lastly, and most recently, Byron High School graduate Sean Considine played in Super Bowl XLVII as a member of the Baltimore Ravens.
We'll be sure to update the list if Dean Lowry plays in a Super Bowl.
