Wisconsin Announces Two New License Plate Options for 2026
Wisconsin drivers will have some fresh choices on their vehicles starting in early 2026, as the state introduces two new license plate designs. It’s a simple update, but one that brings a bit of nostalgia and a bit of modern styling. The designs were unveiled this week by Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, giving residents a first look at what they'll be able to order soon.
When the New Wisconsin Plates Will Be Available
The plates officially roll out in January 2026, according tmj4.com. Drivers can order them online, at most DMV locations, through participating dealers, third-party vendors that carry Wisconsin plates, or via the DMV’s web app.
A Look at the New License Plate Designs
One of the new options is a blackout plate featuring a black background with white text.

The other new design brings back a retro yellow look inspired by plates used in the 1970s.

Why Wisconsin Is Introducing New Plates
According to Gov. Evers, the new designs respond to long-standing requests from drivers while generating ongoing revenue for state road projects. The bipartisan 2025–27 budget includes $5.5 million for the program, and projections show the plates could bring in more than $25 million within the first three years.
Plate Fees and Numbering
Both new plates require a one-time $15 issuance fee and a $25 annual registration fee. Blackout plates will begin with “ZAA 1001,” while retro plates will start with “YAA 1001.”
