Who knew they still have chalkboards?

Yesterday I got the chance to play principal at Maud E. Johnson Elementary School, along with the real principal of course, Mrs. Amber Miller.

Rockford Public Schools Board of Education organized the day where a bunch of us regular people in Rockford got the chance to see what the principal does on a daily basis and wow, it is a lot!

Mrs. Miller was running around the entire day, I'm pretty sure I worked overtime on my pedometer following her helping classes get out to recess, evaluating teachers and making sure kids were always safe and in the right place at the right time.

I had so much fun and noticed that while some things are exactly the same as they were twenty years ago when I was in second grade, some things are definitely not the same!

5 Things That Haven't Changed Since the 90s

  1. Second graders still sit around a fancy chair and listen to stories.
  2. Kids still don't wear coats.
  3. Teachers still have the best handwriting.
  4. Chalkboards still exist.
  5. Fifth grade desks are the worst. (See photo above. How are they supposed to find things in there?)

5 Things That HAVE Changed Since the 90s

  1. There are awesome computers in every room.
  2. Visitor passes aren't handwritten. They have your picture on them.
  3. Kids have interesting names. I didn't see any Michaels, Lisas or Ashleys.
  4. The Smart Board is mystifying and no one needs an overhead projector anymore. (See photo above, that Smart Board is AMAZING!)
  5. Kids buy lunch with credit cards. Well, not real credit cards but it sure looked like it!

Oh, I almost forgot. The fifth graders put on an awesome Halloween show including two songs that I knew all the words too, so Halloween program music hasn't changed much either.
