Several Communitites in Southern Illinois Under Immediate Boil Order
A boil water order has been issued to more than a dozen communities after a water main break in Benton, Illinois.
I've been through 2 boil orders and other than the inconvenience of having to boil all your water, what I remember most is realizing how much water gets used daily in my home.
On Sunday, a water main broke in Benton, Illinois, putting over a dozen communities under an immediate boil order.
If you don’t have safe bottled water, you should boil your water to make it safe to drink. Boiling is the surest method to kill disease-causing germs, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites.
Steps for Boiling Water
If the water is cloudy, first filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter OR allow it to settle. Then, draw off the clear water and follow the steps below, according to the CDC.
- Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes).
- Let the boiled water cool.
- Store the boiled water in clean sanitized containers with tight covers.
According to the Rend Lake Conservancy District, the water main leak was on the water transmission line that serves multiple communities in Franklin and Perry counties.
According to wsiltv, the communities under a boil order are:

- Christopher/North City
- Greenwood Creek-Nation Water System
- Mulkeytown
- Tamaroa
