Drivers Beware, a Trucking Convoy Is Making Its Way Through Illinois This Week
By now I'm assuming we've all seen pictures and read news stories about the trucking protest, or freedom convoys that started in Canada a few weeks ago, and now the movement is spilling into the United States as well.
I'm not going to say I understand everything about this movement, but from what I've read, the root of these convoy protests stems from objections to COVID mandates and general pandemic frustrations, both in Canada and the US. I totally understand the frustration, but these convoys bring along with them dangerous situations that every driver needs to be aware of.
Illinois State Police Warn Drivers of Possible Traffic Dangers This Week
If interstate traveling is on your agenda sometime between now and this Saturday, March 5, 2022, you might want to factor in some extra travel time, because traffic could get...messy.
This past weekend, Illinois State Police released a warning statement that said;
Illinois State Police officials have become aware of a planned event along several interstate corridors scheduled for Saturday, February 26, 2022 – Saturday, March 5, 2022, where truck drivers plan to conduct a “Convoy” causing traffic delays and potentially crashes.
The statement went on to quote Illinois State Police Division of Patrol Colonel Margaret McGreal as saying;
Though the Illinois State Police respects the rights of citizens to express their opinions in a lawful manner, there is great concern with any event that is designed to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.
Those who choose to participate in events that intentionally endanger the public and violate Illinois law will be subject to the enforcement of applicable laws and could potentially be held liable for traffic crashes occurring as a result of their actions.
These trucking convoys will likely affect several roadways throughout the state of Illinois, so PLEASE be prepared and proceed with caution.
