A new report from Construction Coverage just named Illinois the highest-paying state in the nation for construction workers. Using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and adjusted for cost of living, the median wage in Illinois came in at a hefty $79,328. That’s more than $5,000 higher than Hawaii, which took second place.

Midwest States Dominate the Top 10

Turns out, the Midwest is the place to be if you work in this industry. Half the Top 10 highest-paying states are right here in the heartland: Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Ohio all made the list alongside Illinois.

The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area took top honors for high wages in large cities, with an adjusted median wage of $80,248, according to nbcchicago.com. So yes, those orange barrels and lane closures are backed by some serious paychecks.
