I Don’t Blame You, Carrie Underwood.
The Sound of Music LIVE sounded like a good idea, or at least NBC thought so. From what I saw on Facebook and Twitter, most of the people watching the show were ready to hate it before it even started. I thought I'd give it a shot and actually wanted to like it.
The first scene was pretty great. Audra McDonald from Private Practice (and an extensive list of Broadway shows), was fantastic as the Prioress at the Abbey. Then they pan to the hills and the 7-year-old in me was actually expecting Julie Andrews to jump out from behind the tree. Enter: Carrie Underwood. And that was pretty much it for me.
Carrie has a FANTASTIC singing voice, and I'm pretty sure that the NBC execs were focusing more on the music being flawless in a live performance, than using a great actress. This leads me to my suggestion that I wish I would have thought of before this morning: Carrie singing the songs from The Sound of Music with some Von Trapp children. A one hour concert, I would have loved it.
Instead I was expecting her to enter the next scene with a sparkly microphone and tell us she's been "waiting all day for Sunday night."
She's just a little too All-American girl to be Maria, and super American in comparison to ALL of the other actors who had English/Austrian accents.
I don't blame her though, she tried, and she's gonna be fine. Lucky for us, we still have the double VHS tape (or DVD) of the original Sound of Music.
