There's a very good chance you have at least one random bag or cup of grated cheese sitting in your fridge right now.  You know the one, it's used for pasta, pizza night, maybe sprinkled on a salad once, and now it just... lives there.

Well, this is your reminder to actually check it because a cheese recall just hit Illinois.

Cheese Recall Hits Illinois, FDA Warns of Health Risks

Popular brands of Pecorino Romano cheese sold in grocery stores across Illinois (and a lot of other states) are being recalled after potential contamination with Listeria.  The recalled was issued by the company on November 25th, 2025, but earlier this month the FDA officially said it's a Class I recall.

A Class II recall is the most serious level they have.  And yes, that means the FDA is warning that eating these products could cause serious health problems or, in extreme case, even death.  Not exactly the seasoning you want on your spaghetti, right?

The cheese was sold between November 3rd and November 20th, 2025.  More than 11,000 units were pulled.  The recalled products were sold nationwide, and in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

Here's where you really need to pay attention: the recalled cheese was sold in cups and bags of grated cheese under these brand names: Locatelli, Boar's Head, Member's Mark, Ambriola, and Pinna Pecorino Romano products in multiple sizes.

  • Locatelli Pecorino Romano Grated 4 oz. cup
  • Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano 8 oz. cup
  • Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano 6 oz. cup
  • Member’s Mark Pecorino Romano 1.5 lb.
  • Bag Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano
  • Ambriola Grated Pecorino Romano
  • Pinna Grated Pecorino Romano
  • Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Grated bag
