Vindication for Illinois: Shifting Narratives on Outmigration

This is one of those situations where you’re not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Laugh because I knew Illinois and the Midwest have always had qualities worth staying for, but cry because now more people will discover what I've long appreciated, and I'm torn about sharing it.

All of the Illinois bashing over the past handful of years was really proof positive that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and now we've got some real facts to back it up.

That’s because new U.S. Census Bureau data shows not just Illinois but every state in the Midwest gained population between July 2024 and July 2025.

The Affordability Factor: Why Families Are Heading Back to the Heartland

The Midwest is also the only region where all states experienced population growth during that time.

This news put to bed the long-talked-about “Midwest Exodus”, where people were leaving the Midwest for other parts of the country, with the main reason being affordability.

The 'Midwest Exodus' is Officially Over: Census Data Confirms Population Rebound

Now it seems people are moving to or back to the Midwest for the same reason. For years, the story was the other way around; now people are coming to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana for affordable homes, short commutes, and just a few more bucks in the budget.

At long last, vindication. I’m so happy I could cry.

Using the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2019 American Community Survey, Stacker ranked the states based on the percentage of the total population that was born in their state of residence.
