The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has kicked off a major construction project that runs from the Rockford University entrance all the way to Fairview Avenue, including the ever-chaotic Alpine Road intersection, according to wrex.com.

What’s Happening on E. State Street?

The $1.8 million project will bring patching, milling, resurfacing, new sidewalks, upgraded traffic signals, a reconstructed inlet, and even wider right-turn lanes. Translation: fewer potholes (eventually), safer crossings, and maybe less honking at red lights.

Why You’ll Notice It at Night

IDOT promises all the in-roadway work will be done exclusively at night between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. That means your morning commute won’t be stopped by orange cones and flaggers, but night drivers, delivery folks, and late-shift workers, this one’s for you.

If Mother Nature cooperates, the project should wrap up by the end of May 2026. Until then, expect lane closures, flaggers directing traffic, and your usual share of “why is this taking forever?” moments.

Plan Ahead (and Pack Patience)

This is a long-haul project, Rockford. Whether you’re a local commuter or just passing through, plan your drive times and keep your cool in the work zone. Slow down, watch for workers, and remember, smooth pavement is coming. Eventually.
