Speedway officials have placed a large scoop of track surface from Turns 3 and 4 just outside the Pit Gates. It’s free for the taking, so if you’ve been wanting a memento of this beloved racing venue, now’s your chance to grab it.
“We’ve had so many requests for a piece of the track, and we’re thrilled to offer this to our fans,” officials said. “Thank you for wanting to hold onto a piece of Rockford Speedway history.”
However, officials are also issuing a stern warning: stay out of the Speedway grounds. The site is now considered an active demolition zone, complete with unstable structures and heavy machinery. "For your safety, please avoid entering the track area,” officials added.
The Rockford Speedway, which hosted thrilling races for 76 years before closing in October, holds a special place in local history. Opened in 1948, the track was operated by Hugh and Jody Deery from 1966 until Jody's passing in 2022 at age 97. After her passing, the Deery family decided to sell the Speedway and surrounding land, marking the end of an era.
Now, construction is underway for a 14.5-acre retail development on the site, forever changing the landscape of Route 173.
