To help Americans find the most secure places to call home, WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across 41 safety indicators. These included traditional crime stats like assaults and thefts, but also financial and public health risks like unemployment rates, lack of insurance coverage, and natural disaster vulnerability.

These 5 Cities Lead the Nation in Safety

Based on WalletHub's analysis, the five safest cities in the U.S. are:

  1. South Burlington, VT
  2. Casper, WY
  3. Warwick, RI
  4. Burlington, VT
  5. Boise, ID

Eah scored high in a variety of categories, offering a balanced level of physical and financial safety for residents.

One Illinois City Stood Out in the Rankings

While many of the top-performing cities were in smaller, less densely populated regions, one Illinois city stood out by landing inside the Top 50.

Aurora, Illinois, ranked #41 overall.

Aurora's appearance in the national safety rankings is notable, especially as the only Illinois city to earn a high score. Aurora also placed above several well-known metro areas. Nearby Madison, Wisconsin, came in at #19.
