Oh boy, here we go again.

The USDA has issued a recall for several packaged salads and and wraps that were sold at GFS, Walgreen's, Trader Joe's and Kroger stores for possible Cyclospora.

WGN reports that the  U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a recall over several "Beef, pork and poultry" salads and wraps that were distributed by Caito Foods of Indiana, due to contamination of Cyclospora.  ("Caito Foods officials found out from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that some of the products included chopped romaine that was [recently] under recall.")

Cyclospora is nasty. It's "spread when people eat or drink something contaminated with feces." The main reason why you should always wash your fruits and veggies.

Symptoms of Cyclospora "include watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may be noted." Yucky!

Also, it can take between two to 14 days for the illness to incubate. Yikes!

The products in question at Walgreen's and GFS are as follows:

  • Wrap Roast Beef 4/9.5z – Gordon Food Service
  • Salad Chicken Caesar 4/7.5z – Gordon Food Service
  • Salad Santa Fe Chkn 4/8.75z – Gordon Food Service
  • WG SantaFe Salad & Chkn 1/11.5 – Walgreen’s
  • WG Asian Salad & Chkn 1/10.25z – Walgreen’s
  • WG Chicken Caesar 1/10.25z – Walgreen’s
  • WG Chef & Ham&Trky 1/11.5z – Walgreen’s

The products "were produced between July 15 to 18, with the either “Best By,” “Enjoy by,” Best if Sold By” or “Sell By” dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.  The products have the number “EST. 39985 or P-39985” inside or next to the USDA mark of inspection."

The USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service is concerned that because of the long incubation period of Cyclospora many may already have these foods in their refrigerator's. They strongly urge anyone who purchased these products to not eat them, throw them out immediately and/or return the store from where you bought them.

This is almost getting to the point of ridiculousness. I swear eat your own home grown fruits and veggies or buy from a farmer's market and wash everything before eating them. In my opinion, Don't buy anything prepackage.
