Take a look at the original patent for toilet paper from 1891. The classic 'over vs. under' argument... yeah that's settled now.


Seth Wheeler's big brain knew we'd want TP right there next to us while we're on the throne and he knew we'd use too much:

“In carrying out my invention the sheets of paper are only partially separated, having their points of attachment arranged in a novel manner, whereby each sheet will easily separate from the series as it is drawn from the roll, there being no litter occasioned, and any waste of paper is thereby prevented.”

The Consumerist shared another drawing from the Google patents database that shows the paper on the outside of the roll as well.
