Winnebago County Animal Services is now offering a way to add emergency contact information to your pet's tags, including getting an app alert for lost pets.

The service is free and offered through pethub.com. WCAS describes it as "a physical ID tag linked to an animal’s online profile that can be accessed by anyone with a mobile device, whether a smartphone or standard cellular phone." The digital profile can include contact information for anyone who helps care for the animal (spouses/pet sitters/vets/other family and friends/etc) and there are other optional upgrades. For monthly or annual fee pet owners can get “found pet” alerts. Subscribers will receive notifications when a tag is scanned as well as send an alert with the missing pet’s profile to local shelters and businesses. WCAS compares it to an AMBER alert but for animals.

The service will only be available for Winnebago, initially.

“Starting January 1, anyone registering a new pet license through Animal Services or at any Winnebago County veterinary clinic will receive the new digital ID tag that is ‘powered by PetHub."

Current pet owners can learn more about the service and find out how it works for residents outside of Winnebago County by clicking here.
