Have You Ever Seen an ‘Ice Disc’ in Rockford?

I am about to say something that I'm sure most people will think I am crazy for, but the truth is, I love winter. Ok, maybe "love" is a strong word, because I do not like when it gets so cold my face freezes as soon as I step outdoors, but all in all, I truly don't  mind winter.

I love when it snows, even if I hate driving in it. The hours during and after a fresh snow can be so beautiful and peaceful, and I'm currently LOVING what the freezing fog has done to Rockford's outdoor landscape.

Of all the things I love seeing in the winter, this 'ice disc' recently spotted in Rockford is definitely a first for me!

Have you ever seen something like that before? I actually never knew there was such a thing as an 'ice disc', perhaps I don't spend enough time in the great outdoors.

If you're wondering how these cool ice discs form, here's an explanation from Wikipedia;

Ice discs form on the outer bends in a river where the accelerating water creates a force called 'rotational shear', which breaks off a chunk of ice and twists it around.^[1] As the disc rotates, it grinds against surrounding ice — smoothing into a circle.^[2] A relatively uncommon phenomenon, one of the earliest recordings is of a slowly revolving disc spotted on the Mianus River and reported in an 1895 edition of Scientific American.
