Illinois authorities are warning residents about a new scam making the rounds that targets drivers with alarming text messages pretending to be from the state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

According to local law enforcement, scammers are sending texts claiming the recipient has unpaid traffic fines or fees.  The messages often warn that the person's driver's license or vehicle registration will be suspended if payment is not made immediately.

The texts typically include a link directing recipients to a fake website where they are asked to quickly pay the supposed fine.  Officials say the goal is to scare people into acting fast without verifying whether the message is legitimate.

Law enforcement officials say the messages are fraudulent and are not connected to the Illinois Secretary State's Office, which oversees driver services in the state.  The agency does not send text messages demanding payment for fines or threatening to suspend a license through a text alert.

The scam is designed to look convincing, often using urgent language to pressure people into clicking the link and entering personal or financial information.  Once victims provide that information, scammers then steal money or access sensitive data.

Residents are being reminded to be cautious whenever they receive unexpected messages requesting payments, especially if the message urges immediate action.  Anyone who receives this fraudulent text message is encouraged to report to local law enforcement or consumer protection agencies to help investigators track scam activity.
