The Best Place to Retire in the Midwest Might Be Right Here in Illinois
Retirement dreams don’t always have to involve palm trees or ocean breezes. In fact, more and more people are discovering that the Midwest offers a mix of affordability, comfort, and livability that makes it a strong contender for the next chapter of life.
But with so many small towns and suburbs across the region, figuring out which ones truly shine can be overwhelming. That’s where new national rankings come in handy, especially when they spotlight places close to home.
Why the Midwest Is Gaining Attention for Retirement
The Midwest offers retirees a blend of slower-paced living, lower costs compared to coastal states, and easy access to major metro areas. It’s a region where community ties are strong, healthcare is very accessible, and seasonal living brings a comforting rhythm.
What Makes a Town Desirable for Retirees
To determine the 'most livable places to retire', GOBankingRates.com looked at towns of at least 10,000 residents, where a third or more of the population is already over 65. They also scored each place for overall livability, considering everything from income levels to amenities like restaurants, outdoor activities, and access to culture.
Illinois Earns a Spot on the National Retirement List

While sunny states like Florida dominated the rankings, Illinois made a splash with two towns landing in the top 20 nationally. That’s no small feat, considering the stiff competition from traditional retirement hot spots.

Illinois also landed another standout: Huntley, ranking No. 19. This growing village has become popular with retirees thanks to its more affordable housing market, a median income of $86,349, and a reputation for being welcoming and community-oriented. Huntley offers a slower pace than Burr Ridge but plenty of amenities and access to healthcare, making it an equally appealing choice.
Both towns prove that Illinois isn’t just a place to grow up or work, it can also be a rewarding place to retire.
