Living in the Midwest means unpredictable weather.  Snowstorms, flooding, tornadoes, negative degree temperatures, and summers that could be hotter.

As we transition from winter to spring, there are a lot of seasonal changes we're about to see, that includes tornadoes, floods, hail, earthquakes, and everything in-between.  Again, very unpredictable when you live here.

Did you know that April is the deadliest month in Illinois?  We're about to enter tornado season.

According to a report last year, Illinois had the most tornadoes in the entire country in 2023.

"Illinois had the most tornadoes in the country last year with 120. Illinois had the most tornadoes of any state in 2023, more than tripling its number of tornadoes from the previous year, according to the National Weather Service." [chicago suntimes]

Of course, tornadoes can happen any time of year, but we'll see the most in April.  April, May, and June are peak months to see them in Illinois.

"April, May and June are the months with the most potential of having both the greatest number of tornadoes and the most intense tornadoes in a given year."

If you live in Cook County, you should be aware that you live in the most vulnerable county for tornado damage. It's confirmed Cook County has the most tornadoes in Illinois.

How to prepare for tornado season:

  • Stock emergency kits
  • Have non-perishable foods in your safe zone
  • Make sure everyone in your house knows where to take cover
  • Stay away from large windows & don't go outside
