Waymo is recalling nearly 3,900 robotaxis in the country after some of its autonomous vehicles reportedly drove into closed freeway construction zones, according to filings submitted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The voluntary recall marks the second time in just over a month that the self-driving company has taken this step to address software-related issues in its autonomous driving system.

Regulators noted that vehicles using Waymo's 5th generation automated driving system are included in the recall.  A letter posted to the agency's website emphasizes that "driving through a closed construction zone increases the risk of a crash."

Waymo actually identified "an area of improvement regarding performance around freeway construction zones."  They added that it voluntarily paused freeway operations last month while developing software updates, and decided to initiate the recall as a precautionary measure.  They continue to operate safely on surface streets around the country.
