Every week since her dog passed away, a woman has been reading stories to dogs at a local shelter so they don't feel so lonely.

My husband and I often talk about what we would do if and when our dog, Pip, passes away. Both of us agreed that we wouldn't be able to function; that we would probably need to take at least a month off from work just to cope with the loss.  He is incorporated in every part of our daily lives; from his morning and evening routine to the songs we sing. Yeah, we're a little obsessed but that's how much we love him. I'm sure you get the same way with your pet, yes?

Sandra Barbabella must've had a similar if not much closer relationship with her dog that died a year and a half ago. For one day a week, since her dog passed, she's dropped by the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society with children's books to read to the dogs. She thought it would be the best way to return all the love that her Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Angus, gave her.

A photo of her reading to the dogs in their cages and now gone viral and has captured the heart of animal lovers around the world.

Is it possible for your heart to be filled with so much joy and sadness at the same time? This is so much better than laying in my bed for a month straight.

If you're interested in volunteering at your own local animal shelters, I encouraged you to search for opportunities on the Shelter Pet Project or connect with Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary in Rockford.
