Two of Wisconsin's most beloved food groups just took a hit. Brace yourselves. If you think nothing could ruin a good brat stuffed with cheese, think again.

If you're looking for signs of the apocalypse, here's a big one: brats and cheese are under attack. Johnsonville — yes, our Johnsonville — just recalled over 22,000 pounds of cheddar bratwurst.

That's right, the sacred brat stuffed with cheese has been recalled. Because apparently, someone thought "crunchy hard plastic" belonged on the topping list. Spoiler alert: it doesn't.

I like my brats with mustard and onions, not shards of Tupperware.

The recall came after two unlucky folks discovered plastic pieces in their sausages. Johnsonville reported it to the USDA, which immediately issued a Class I recall, aka the "this-could-seriously-injure-you" kind. As a proud Wisconsin native, I find this both deeply offensive and mildly traumatic.

The recalled "Johnsonville BRATS CHEDDAR Bratwurst" packages were produced on February 5, 2025, and stamped with the establishment number Est. 1647. If your freezer looks like a Johnsonville distribution center (as any proper Midwest freezer should), it's time to check for these.

Cheeseheads... Check Your Freezer

The recall affects retail stores in Wisconsin and several other states, so if you've stocked up, give those packages a hard side-eye. While no injuries have been reported (thank the brat gods), the USDA is urging consumers not to eat these plastic-stuffed brats.

If you've got one in your freezer, return it or toss it. And if you're feeling extra cautious, reach out to your healthcare provider — especially if your brat bit back.
