When Summer break comes, it can be very difficult for many children in our area to get a couple healthy meals a day. In some cases it's near impossible to get even one.

One group in our area is working very hard to make sure kids in need can continue to get the meals they need.

Community Action Agency of Winnebago and Boone counties has started their Summer food program to provide free lunches and snacks, according to wifr.com. Many non-profit agencies around Boone and Winnebago counties will be providing the meals for kids 18 and younger.

Parents should contact the sites about their program enrollment requirements, lunch/snack schedule and other details.

The Summer Food Service Program is operated nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), administered by the Illinois State Board of Education, and managed locally by the City of Rockford Human Services Department, a Community Action Agency. The lunches and snacks are provided by Lifescape Community Services of Rockford.
