As more details emerge about the living conditions, history of abuse, and death of AJ Freund at the hands of his parents in Crystal Lake, I am sickened to the core. I literally cannot understand how a parent can be so evil to a child you spent years "caring" for and, in the case of his mother, spent 9 months carrying and creating. She chose to bring him into this world, and then treated him like he was a punishment. I hope there is a special corner in Hell reserved for Andrew Freund and JoAnn Cunningham, and I also hope they spend eternity feeling the pain, sadness and neglect that AJ felt in his 6 years on Earth thanks to them.

Now that I have got that off my chest, let me get to my point. Many people are blaming the Illinois DCFS system for failing AJ, and I can't say that I disagree with them. What I can say though is blaming them changes nothing, doing something you feel passionately about does.

Winnebago County CASA, (Winnebago County Court Appointed Special Advocates) makes it their mission "to assist the Court in seeking the best interests of abused and neglected children through Court appointed volunteer advocacy."  In short, they train people to be the voices for children who need help, and sadly they always need more volunteers.

If I could find the time and ability to control my temper when it comes to the adults doing these children harm, I would volunteer in a heartbeat. I'm hoping you feel the same, and do they have the time to dedicate to this vital program. Please call Winnebago Country CASA today at 815-319-6880 to find out how you can help.
