Kohl’s Closing Nearly 30 Stores Including in Illinois
Retail therapy just got a little more complicated, as Kohl’s announced the closure of nearly 30 stores across the country. With brick-and-mortar giants struggling to keep up in an age of online shopping, the latest round of closures has shoppers wondering if their favorite store is next.
Illinois Kohl’s Stores Next to Bite the Dust
Another day, another brick-and-mortar retailer clutching its pearls and claiming, “It’s not us—it’s the economy.” This time, it’s Kohl’s, everyone’s favorite spot to get a blender, leggings, and last-minute holiday socks all in one trip. The retail giant announced plans to close nearly 30 locations across the country.
It’s no secret that brick-and-mortar stores are in their flop era. Shopping malls are basically ghost towns with pretzel stands, and the convenience of online shopping has us clicking “Add to Cart” at 2 a.m. in our pajamas. Throw in soaring rents and the fact that Kohl’s cash has expiration dates shorter than a loaf of bread, and you’ve got a recipe for shuttered storefronts.
To their credit, Kohl’s isn’t ghosting its employees entirely—impacted workers have been offered either severance packages or the chance to apply for another role. Because nothing says, “We care,” like, “How do you feel about relocating to Boise?”
But what does this mean for Illinois? Are you safe to procrastinate your returns another week? Spoiler alert: Not exactly. Two stores in Illinois are set to close. First, Plainfield shoppers, it’s time to find a new place to impulse-buy fleece blankets. And for West Dundee, well, at least you’ll still have that mall food court.
So, what do we do with these soon-to-be-empty stores? Community center? Indoor pickleball arena? Personally, I vote for a giant Kohl’s Cash museum—because nothing deserves to be immortalized more than the $5 coupon you found in your glove compartment five months too late.
