Rockford Honors a Teacher Who Makes Learning Possible for Every Ability
Some of the most meaningful teaching happens quietly, through patience, structure, and a deep commitment to meeting students where they are. This week’s 97ZOK Teacher of the Week is being recognized for the way she creates a safe, effective learning environment for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering consistency, compassion, and individualized support every single day. Her impact reaches beyond her own classroom as well, through mentoring new educators and strengthening the field of special education across the Rockford community.
97ZOK Teacher of the Week

Congratulations, Abbey Key from Rolling Green Elementary School in Rockford, Illinois
Grace Kennedy nominated Abbey, she writes,
Abbey teaches a self-contained special education classroom for students with intellectual and developmental delays. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that each of her students is given quality learning opportunities specifically designed for them. She uses consistent boundaries to develop a safe and effective learning space while also leaving space for each student to express themselves.
I worked with Abbey as I was starting my career and she taught me so much about how to connect with students in this educational setting. She consistently takes on student teachers and is committed to the field by learning and using new strategies and passing on her skills to others. She is a great addition to the community and truly makes a difference for some of our most vulnerable students.
As Teacher of the Week, Abbey was surprised with a cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes, money to spend at WM Day Spa Salon, and lunch courtesy of Redd Insurance Group.
Listen below to my conversation with Abbey and discover why Rolling Green families should be so thankful for one single conversation she had with her mom about college.
