Rockford Teacher of the Week is Building Resilient Learners for Life
Some teachers teach a subject. Others shape the way a child sees themselves. This week’s 97ZOK Teacher of the Week is one of those rare educators whose influence reaches far beyond test scores and report cards. Through patience, compassion, and a deep understanding that every child learns differently, she creates a classroom where students feel seen, supported, and capable.

Congratulations to Theresa Bartsch from Bloom Elementary in Rockford, Illinois
Some teachers help children learn their lessons. Others change how children see themselves.
Mia Goddard nominated Theresa, she writes,
Mrs. Bartsch is one of those rare teachers.
I would like to nominate Mrs. Bartsch for Teacher of the Week because she is not just an outstanding educator. She is someone who has had a lasting impact on my family.
Mrs. Bartsch has taught all three of my children. One of them was fortunate enough to have her for both fourth and fifth grade, which allowed us to see her influence deepen over time. She does not simply teach a grade level. She truly gets to know her students and meets them where they are.
Two of my children entered Mrs. Bartsch’s classroom with learning disabilities. School felt intimidating, and they doubted their own abilities. With Mrs. Bartsch’s support, patience, and belief in them, those same children became confident, excited learners who look forward to going to school each day.
Their growth showed in many ways. Their test scores improved, but even more meaningful was the shift in how they approached learning. They became curious. They asked questions. They took chances. They were more willing to face challenges, work through problems, and keep going when things felt difficult. They learned resilience, problem solving, and confidence, skills that will stay with them long after fifth grade.
Mrs. Bartsch makes this possible by teaching each child as an individual. She understands that students learn in different ways and adjusts her teaching so every child has a real chance to succeed. She holds high expectations while offering the guidance students need to meet them. Her classroom is a place where students feel comfortable trying, making mistakes, and learning from them.
She also brings a genuine love of learning into her classroom. Mrs. Bartsch has an extensive classroom library, and she has read every book in it. She takes the time to connect students with stories that speak to them and shares her enthusiasm for reading in a way that feels natural. That love of learning is something her students carry with them.
As a fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Bartsch plays an important role in preparing students for middle school. She helps them build independence and confidence as expectations increase, while still being a reliable source of support.
One of my children came into Mrs. Bartsch’s classroom feeling discouraged and unsure of herself. School felt heavy, and confidence was hard to come by. Mrs. Bartsch responded with patience, understanding, and encouragement that met her exactly where she was. Over time, my child began to believe in herself again, rediscovered a joy for learning, and gained the confidence to apply for a specialized arts program in middle school. That kind of growth comes from being truly seen and supported.
Mrs. Bartsch is also remarkably humble. When I have thanked her for the difference she has made in my children’s lives, she always points back to their effort and perseverance, saying she was simply their teacher. That humility reflects the way she lifts her students up and helps them take pride in their own growth.
Even while facing challenges of her own, Mrs. Bartsch continues to show up fully for her students each day. She clearly values her role and understands how deeply a teacher can shape a child’s experience and sense of self.
Mrs. Bartsch is the kind of teacher every family hopes for. She builds confidence, encourages resilience, and helps children discover a love of learning. Our family is deeply grateful for the role she has played in our children’s lives, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition as Teacher of the Week.
