As we're just hours away from Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial kickoff to summer, I'm guessing many Stateliners are planning on spending some of their weekend on, or in, the water.

As I was writing a story about the season opener of the Ski Broncs Water Ski Show Team yesterday, I noticed something on the Ski Broncs' Facebook that had me going, huh? The post said;

With Memorial day right around the corner it's important to remember swimming at Shorewood Park or any park with open water is illegal. Please help us spread the word and do our part to prevent unnecessary accidents.

By "open water" do they mean any beach spaces not supervised by a lifeguard? I've grown up spending my summers on the water, and I often see people swimming at beaches along the Rock River...how did I not know that it is illegal to do that? I understand  that it's a risk to swim somewhere where a lifeguard isn't present, but illegal? That kind of blew my mind.

If you too are a little confused about what you can, and can't do, at beaches in the Rockford area, here's a little refresher and some safety tips from the Rockford Fire Department...

Whatever you have planned for Memorial Day weekend, please be safe and have fun! I think we've all earned a little summer fun freedom after enduring the last year filled with pandemic craziness.

If you still need more ideas for what to do this weekend, here's just a few of the things happening in the Stateline area on Memorial Day weekend...
